Jack Mohn Obituary

Jack E. Mohn, a resident of Sun City West, Arizona, and Madison, South Dakota, passed away on
June 13, 2022, at the age of 95. Jack was born on June 30, 1926, in Mobridge, South Dakota, and was
one of three children of Dr. Malin C. Mohn and Adeline (Leffingwell) Mohn. He is survived by his
children: Richard (Pamela) Mohn and David (Dani) Mohn; four grandchildren: Jordan, Scott (Kourtney),
Kelsey (Steven) and Colleen (Christopher); and four great grandchildren: Devyn, Carsyn, Wyatt and
Aubrey. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rachel (Nelson) Mohn, and two sisters, June and
Donna.
Jack grew up in South Dakota and graduated from Mobridge High School in 1945. He attended
Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and graduated with a Bachelors’ degree in history in
1949. He met his first wife, Rachel, while attending Northern State College, and they were married on
August 24, 1950. Jack and Rachel began their careers teaching high school in small towns in
northeastern South Dakota and later in Sioux City, Iowa. Jack enjoyed coaching football and basketball
teams during that time. Their two sons, Richard and David, were born, and in 1958 the family moved to
Watertown, South Dakota, and opened a Ben Franklin variety store downtown, which was a huge
success. Jack and his family were active members of the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer where he
sang tenor in the church choir and volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America. In 1986, Jack and Rachel
relocated to Sun City West, Arizona, to enjoy the warmer weather. Too young to retire, Jack began
selling real estate for Prudential Mull Smith and soon became a top producer for the company. His
eldest son Richard joined him in the real estate business in 1995. They worked together until Jack’s
retirement in 2021, a span of 35 years and countless open houses, which were Jack’s favorite part of the
job. Jack’s friendly, charismatic nature and ability to connect with people contributed to his many years
of success in the field. He was truly a legend in real estate!
In 2004, after nearly 55 years of marriage, Jack’s first wife and lifelong partner, Rachel, passed
away. As Jack desired to continue living life to the fullest, he was blessed to find a wonderful companion
in Lucille Palmquist Mohn, and they were married on March 11, 2006. Jack and Lucille enjoyed being
active members of Church on the Green and loved dancing and dining at the Briarwood Country Club in
Sun City West, Arizona. Jack always looked forward to taking annual hunting trips with his son David and
his family. He also loved fishing, gardening, spending time with family and friends, and traveling around
the world. Jack and Lucille visited more than 70 countries and traveled to all 7 continents, even
Antarctica! He especially enjoyed a trip to Israel where he saw all of the historical biblical sights.
According to Jack, seeing those places “made the bible come alive.”
Those who had the privilege to know Jack understand the positive impact of his unending
support and love. Jack’s zest for life, adventurous spirit, and faith will continue to inspire generations to
come. His memory lives on in those he loved, and his many stories and words of encouragement will not
be forgotten. He will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at the Camino del Sol Funeral Chapel in Sun City West, Arizona
on Saturday, July 23rd at 10:00 am.
