"He was such a gentleman in all ways"
Albert L. Melton (BGEN, USAF - Ret.) passed away peacefully on January 9, 2024, at the Grandview Health and Rehabilitation Center in Sun City West, AZ. Born December 16, 1928, on a farm near Woodville, Alabama, Albert was the son of Laudry & Nina Sue Melton, and brother to the late Harlan Melton.
After working at Hodges Drug Store as a teenager, Albert was set to get his Pharmacy degree when he changed his course and entered the Air Force Aviation Cadet program in 1949, beginning his lifelong devotion to flying. His illustrious 28 year career in the Air Force, including combat missions in Korea & Vietnam, culminated in his promotion to Brigadier General and assignment to Beale AFB in Maryville, CA, where he retired in 1977 as Commander of the 14th Air Division (SAC).
In 1956, while stationed at Luke AFB here in Phoenix, Albert met and married the love of his life, Mary Helen Schmidt of Cape Girardeau, MO. Mary Helen was a devoted Air Force wife and helpmate till Albert's retirement, when they settled first in Memphis, TN, before moving to Sun City West in 1993. They were happily married a glorious 67 years.
In addition to his wife, Albert is survived by his niece, Lori Ann White of Scottsboro AL; and his nephew, Michael Bianchi of Sun City West.
