Daniel (Dan) Thornburg Obituary

Daniel James (Dan) Thornburg age 71, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, passed away on February 9, 2024, in Surprise, Arizona with family by his side.

Dan had the distinction of being the first born of 6 boys to Bob and Loretta Thornburg in Missoula, Montana on February 29, 1952, Leap Year.  He was raised and educated in Missoula and was a member of the National Honor Society. He was an accomplished Boy Scout earning Eagle Scout status, the highest rank attainable. And played in the high school band.  He attended Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana.

Dan’s passions included his family and friends, all sports, especially the Phoenix Suns and Arizona Cardinals and a frosty Blue Moon Beer with a slice of orange. He enjoyed a round of golf when he could fit it in.  He played an active part in the Missoula Recreation Leagues playing basketball, softball, and volleyball.  So much so that he and his brother Rob owned and operated a seasonal batting cage business for a time. Coaching his son’s Little League team was a privilege and an honor he mentioned often.

His career started working alongside his father and brothers in the family construction business. He worked for Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks repairing remote outdoor facilities.  A construction career opportunity took he and Terrie to Phoenix, Arizona in 1987.  His career in the Southwest included golf course construction and maintenance and master planned community construction.

While his home for most of the year was in Phoenix, he built a cabin in Evaro outside of Missoula where they would spend their summers gathering with their family and friends.  The cabin allowed for peace and quiet, reading, and wildlife to be enjoyed in his leisure when he wasn’t cutting up firewood for the firepit.  And puttering with other outdoor projects.  Dan learned from his father to be a steward of the land where his cabin sits.  The Cabin on Owl Ridge was truly his happy place. Especially when the grandkids would come to visit Grandpa Dan at the cabin.

Dan taught us all how to be better people through his patient and tolerant ways.  He was kind, caring, charming, and witty with a great sense of humor.  His sweet disposition and wonderful smile will be missed by many.  He was truly a gentle man.

Survivors include his wife, Terrie, Surprise, AZ and Missoula, MT, Son Jason (Sheri) and family, Jaela, Dylan, Brent, Cheney, WA, Son Brandon (Tommi) and family, Samantha, Robby, Jory, Kalispell, MT, Step-son Brett (Tracy) and family, Ty, Kalli, Adna, WA., Brother Rob (Janet) and family, Ryan, Britni, Missoula, MT, Brother Rick (Socorro) and family,  Trevor, Angela, Alex, Vanessa, Daniel, Snowflake, AZ, Brother Tim (Anne) and family, Trent, Andreah, Phoenix, AZ, Brother Ted (Brenda) and family, Kristin, Eric, Evaro, MT.  And loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.  He is also survived by the mother of his sons, Theresa Johnston.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Janniel and brother, Jerry.

The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at Banner Del Webb Medical Center, Sun City West and the staff at Hospice of the Valley, Surprise for their thoughtful and respectful care of Dan and our family.  A Celebration of Life will be held in Arizona and Montana at a later date.
