Doris Mary (Wians) Tolar

On Friday, April 8, 2022, Doris Mary Tolar, loving wife and devoted mother of five children, went home to be with her Lord at the age of 94.  Doris was born on August 17, 1927 in Chicago, IL to Arthur and Marguerite (Kammerer) Wians.  She married John Henry Tolar on October 19, 1946.  Before marrying, Doris worked as a secretary in downtown Chicago.  After marrying, she was a homemaker, and after raising her children, she worked in several clerical positions outside the home.  Doris was also an active volunteer at her church and the local hospital, always looking to be an encouragement and bring a smile to those she met.   Doris was preceded in death by her parents and her four sisters, Harriet Forster (Wilfred), Laverne Rogers (Norman), Crystal Jarsombeck (Earl) and Arlene Daley.  She is survived by her husband; her five children, son Larry Tolar (Joyce), daughter Laura Visser, daughter Marcy Tolar, son John Tolar (Nancy), daughter Jenny Tolar; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Doris was passionate about and deeply committed to her family.  Being truly one with her beloved husband for 75 years, she built a home where her children and grandchildren knew they were loved.  She found solace and strength from her faith in Christ and modeled a life of integrity, compassion, and service.  She was always the one to remember others with a hand-written note of encouragement, a kind word, or a thoughtful gift.  She was a gifted organizer and planned many church and family events.  Doris loved children and found joy in doing things with them…going to the park, making cookies, playing games, drawing pictures.  Family gatherings and meals were a highlight for her and she always made sure there was plenty of dessert.  She liked to say that “anything is better with more sugar” and always had five or six jars filled with favorite candies for family and friends. 

A service to celebrate Doris's life will be held on Sunday, June 5, 2022 at 4:00 PM at Lakeview United Methodist Church at 10298 W. Thunderbird Blvd. Sun City, Arizona 85351.
