Dorothy J. Blum was born in McCook, NE, on November 8, 1929, to Forrest J. and Eugenia K. Scrivner. She passed Away at the Colonnade in Surprise, AZ, on January 1, 2022. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and at the time of her death was a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West. Dorothy graduated from Haigler, NE, high school, then received her BA from Midland College in Fremont, NE, later earning an MA degree from the University of Nebraska. Dorothy was a musician, an educator, administrator, and author. She will be missed by a host of friends and former students. She taught music in public schools in Nebraska, Kansas, Arizona, California, and Virginia. She later earned a doctorate in Guidance and Counseling at University of Virginia, then worked as professor and administrator at the university level. Her books on school counseling continue to be in use today. In 1970, she married Richard (Dick) Blum. They were married until Dick’s death in 2017, making their home in Springfield, VA. Upon retirement, they moved to Sun City Grand, AZ, located in Surprise, AZ. While in Virginia, they hosted two sisters as exchange students from Finland. It began a friendship that grew over the years, with several trips back and forth. Dorothy and Dick spent summers in their cottage in Western Maryland and later summered in Grants Pass, OR. Dorothy was an avid genealogist, researching her family through primary documents and spending many hours in Washington, D.C., Salt Lake City, UT, and the Phoenix area on this subject. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Dick, her parents, a sister, Marilyn Holzwarth, and two nephews. She is survived by a sister, Gwen Jacobsen of Grants Pass, OR, a step-son Rick Blum of California, two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, several nieces and nephews, two exchange daughters, and many, many friends throughout the U.S. A memorial service will be held at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, where she will be inurned with her husband. Any suggested memorials could be given to Lord of Life Lutheran Church or to a charity of your choice.
