Gary Sachau Obituary

Gary Sachau, 70, of Surprise, Arizona lost his valiant battle with esophageal cancer in the early morning hours of February 17, 2024 surrounded in love by his family.

Born on May 26, 1953, Gary, affectionately known by his family as Papa, Daddio, Mr. Stag Island and Gare Bear, was an amazing husband, father, grandfather and brother, and "funcle" and who, after 66 years, retired with his wife and uprooted their life in Michigan, to relocate closer to their children in sunny Arizona in 2020.

He leaves behind his wife Moe, daughter Julie (Chris) McComb, son Sean (Megan), sisters Kathi Sopsich and the late Pat (Charlie) Carpenter, brother Dave (Denise) of Michigan, grandsons Caden, Cash and Jaxson, granddaughter Ellie, sister-in-law Patt (Ken) Franc, nieces, nephews, and the majority of Southeastern Michigan and Stag Island, Ontario.

He will always be remembered as an incredible sports fan (analyst) and supporter of his beloved Michigan Teams and the local Imagine Prep sports program, an encouraging youth coach, a Dynamite “Dasher”, a friendly neighbor, an incredible fix-it man, a freakin' wicked Euchre player, Adele’s biggest fan, King of “The Hustle” line dance, and a real wise guy.

Gary was always there to lend a hand (and an opinion) to anyone in need. He was incredibly resourceful and had every tool known to man right in his garage, which was often mistaken as Harbor Freight, his favorite store. The other half of his garage was loaded with Christmas Décor befitting his title “Arizona’s Clark Griswold”.  He loved so deeply and always wanted to share that love with everyone, especially his grandchildren.  Every summer, he moved his life to the family cottage on Stag Island and called it home because he also found family there.

His Arizona family invites everyone to join us to Celebrate Gary’s life on Monday, February 19, from 3pm-6pm, at the home of Patt and Ken Franc at 27276 W. Mohawk Ln, Buckeye, Arizona.  Please join us in raising a glass of Bacardi & Diet (no fruit), a plate of pigs-in-a-blanket, and sharing fond memories together.

Another Celebration of Gary’s life will be held this summer in Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Hospice of the Valley, true angels on earth, online at https://hov.org/donate/ or by mail Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014.

Please join the family in sharing memories, pictures or videos on Gary’s tribute wall at www.caminodelsol.com
