Gordon Belliston Obituary

Gordon Franklin Belliston passed away peacefully February 9th, 2024. He was born August 20, 1931, in the small rural farming town of Rupert, Idaho to Joseph Franklin and Matilda (Broadhead) Belliston. Including himself, his parents had 9 children: 6 boys (one having passed away just a couple of months before he was born) and 2 girls.  During his childhood he alternated living between Rupert and Albion Idaho. After graduating from high school in 1950 he followed the example of several of his patriotic elder brothers and enlisted in the U.S Navy. His first assignment was to a naval shipyard in San Francisco, California. In August of 1953 he was assigned to a NATO base in Naples, Italy. Prior to being honorably discharged, he had many great experiences and was able to visit Vatican City, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Turkey and Greece.

According to Gordon, the happiest day of his life was January 26, 1961, the day he was married to his beautiful wife Barbara. He was 29 years old and was beginning to wonder if he would ever find anyone who would have him. He couldn’t have been luckier. Not only did she decide to have him, but she also stuck by him through thick and thin for 63 years during which time they grew their family by having 3 sons: Gregory, Stanley and James. One of the saddest days of his life was when James passed away in June 2022.

He had a long career working for the Federal Government. He wouldn’t say it was the most fulfilling of careers, but it put a roof over his family’s heads, food in their bellies and clothes on their backs. He retired from the Bureau of Reclamation and immediately went to work for the Central Arizona Project, where he worked for another 10 plus years. Dad always had at least one second job going. Even after retiring from the CAP, he worked for a delivery service well into his eighties.

When he wasn’t working or puttering around the house, he could be found at the bowling alley competing in various leagues or on the golf course. Health issues forced him to begrudgingly abandon his bowling pursuits, but he was still able to golf until the end. In fact, 2 weeks prior to his passing he was still golfing with, and beating, his neighborhood golfing buddies!

Gordon was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He had a strong testimony of The Saviour and strived to be His disciple as was demonstrated through the life he lived. Gordon had the opportunity to serve in numerous church callings over his lifetime. Well into his later years, Dad mentored and served not only his wife, family, friends, and those in the church, but many in his retirement community, regardless of their religious affiliation.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, 8 siblings, his youngest son James Arthur and granddaughter Annie Jo.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Barbara Pauline; his 2 sons Gregory Franklin (Vivian) Belliston and Stanley Martin (Grace Lee) Belliston; 7 Grandchildren, Geoffrey Franklin, Abigail Lauren, Sean Martin, Christan Scott, Lindsey LaNell, Taylor Joseph, Jordan Thomas and Cameron Marie and 5 great-grandchildren, Dakota Ryley, Mackenzie Marie, Hayley Jayne, Kaiah Nicole and Saige LaNell.  Gordon is also survived by a plethora of nieces and nephews.
