H. Lloyd Thompson (1930-2024)
Harold Lloyd Thompson, beloved husband and father, passed away Sunday,
April 7, 2024, in Sun City West, Arizona, at the age of 93.
He was born on July 25, 1930, in Orofino, Idaho, to Harold Sabro Thompson and Lenora Snyder, joining his older siblings, Art and Betty. From early adulthood, Lloyd enjoyed horseback riding. With a passion for baseball, as a young man he successfully pitched for the Idaho Junior American Legion team, even playing against legendary Satchel Paige with the Kansas City Monarchs, as well as for other teams in Spokane and Richland, Washington.
Lloyd met the love of his life, Mildred Strand, at Kinman Business College in Spokane and they soon married on November 23, 1950. The couple moved to Richland shortly thereafter, where Lloyd opened his Western Auto store. Spanning over 40 years in the Tri-Cities, it was there that he and Mildred raised six children. As a young adult, he came to know Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior and was a member of First Baptist Church.
In 1980, Lloyd sold his Western Auto store and went to work as a warehouse manager for Washington Public Power Supply System in the Hanford Area. Upon retirement, Lloyd and Mildred made the move from Richland to Arizona, where he loved his Sun City West community—warm days, playing golf with his buddies, his faith family at Palm West Community Church, and his family gatherings in the Valley of the Sun. Lloyd was a loyal man with a caring heart who loved his family.
Sadly, Lloyd’s health began to decline Fall 2023, and he never fully recovered. He is survived by his wife, Mildred, and children: Marcia (and Steve) Taylor,
Vicki Bradshaw, Reggie (and Katie) Thompson, Keith (and Melanie) Thompson, Kimberley (and Grant) Rodkey, and Rebecca (and Derek) Reid. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Megan, Brianna, Nicholas, Kelsey, Charlie, David, Bethany, Ben, and Spencer; plus, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lloyd will be buried at River View Cemetery in Portland, Oregon next to his parents and grandmother, Emma Thompson. A memorial and celebration of life is being planned for July.
