James Lewis Allen, 71 passed away May 1, 2023, in Peoria, AZ. He was born on March 7, 1952, at St. Ignatius, Montana to Oscar C and Josephine E (Button) Allen. He attended the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind, graduating in 1970. After graduation, he attended Seattle Community College studying Diesel Mechanics.
Jim retired from the US Postal Service in Missoula, MT. In his free time, Jim was very active in the Deaf Community in both Montana and Phoenix, AZ. He served in leadership positions with the Montana Association of the Deaf and Greater Phoenix Deaf Senior Citizens. He co-founded outdoor recreation clubs including the Big Sky Recreation for the Deaf and Western States Deaf Campers. If there was a camp, he made sure to be there playing games and cooking up his breakfast specialty. His favorite things were being outdoors camping, boating, fishing, traveling, and playing card games with his friends and family. He loved to socialize within the Deaf Community and spend time with his family making memories.
Jim is survived by his wife Kathy of Phoenix, AZ, his son Charles (Traci) Allen of Bozeman, MT, and daughter Jennifer (Greg) Kelly of Herriman, UT. He is also survived by his sister, Virginia B.
Shields of Casa Grande, AZ and a sister-in-law Judy Allen. Jim has four beautiful grandchildren; Brielle, Braxton, Zachary, and Liam who he was always proud to spend time with.
Jim was proceeded in death by his parents Oscar and Josephine Allen, his brothers Duane and William, and brother-in-law Gary Shields.
We invite all who loved and knew Jim to join us at a Celebration of his life on Saturday May 20, 2023, at 2:00pm at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, Surprise Ward, 15880 W. Cactus Rd. Surprise, AZ 85379. Reception to follow.
Memorials in his name may be sent to some of his recent active organizations including Greater Phoenix Deaf Senior Citizens, Deaf Seniors of America, and National Association of the Deaf.
