Jean Merritt Obituary

Jean Ann (Gormley} Merritt, age 100 of Sun City Grand, Surprise, Arizona died 11/29/2021 peacefully in her sleep at her home.

Jean was born in Sycamore, IL. the daughter of Louis V. and Laura (Crawford} Gormley. She graduated from the Genoa High School in 1940. She then attended Northern Illinois State Teacher's College where she received a teacher's certificate. She then taught school at the Davis Country School.

She married Donald B. Merritt at Beaufort, SC 5/31/1943 during World War II.

She was a homemaker raising her boys, and loved planning family trips every summer to see the USA in an Oldsmobile.

She had a passion for shopping especially at Marshall Fields.

After her boys were off to college, she returned to teaching. First as a substitute teacher, and then as the learning center aid at the Genoa Grade School.

She and her husband retired in Mt. Home, AR and then moved to Arizona in 1999.

She is survived by 2 sons, Richard B. Merritt of Phoenix, AZ. and David L (Vicki} Merritt of Pflugerville, TX., 2 grandchildren, Joshua Merritt of Pflugerville, TX. and Nicole E. Merritt of Austin, TX., and 3 nieces Tammy Cavarretta, Dianne Bloyd, and Connie Oar,

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald B. Merritt in 2003, her sister Elizabeth "Betty" L. (Willard) Ollmann, her bothers Phillip C. (Shirly) Gormley, and Thomas Gormley, nieces Mary Ann Ollmann, Carol (Vaughn) Kalstom, and nephew Brian Vaughn.

A celebration of Life will be at a later date with her ashes being laid to rest in the Genoa Cemetery in Genoa, IL.---with a lunch following.
