LaWanda Price Obituary

Lawanda Lee Hathcock was born January 9th, 1936, in Flint, Michigan, to Agatha Marguerite Tebo and Basil Frank Hathcock.  She moved to California as a young woman, eventually settling in Santa Cruz, where she so wisely purchased a house (who knew?) in which to raise her 3 children.  There, she met her beloved husband of 36 years, Doug, whose own 3 children she took under her wing.  The family moved to the Seattle area where she became clinical manager for a group of doctors before she and Doug started a very successful automotive repair, gas station, convenience market, and coffee shop business.  They also built a spacious home in which they raised their 6 children – 5 boys and one girl!  They enjoyed taking their children, grand-children, and friends on many boat adventures in their 34-foot boat, to beautiful and isolated waters in the U.S. and Canada.  After retirement, she and Doug moved back to Santa Cruz where they completely remodeled her house from the ground up, sold it, and began driving all around the United States looking for their dream place to call home.  They chose Sun City Grand, where they happily put down roots.  Sadness followed several years later, first with the death of LaWanda’s only daughter, Cathy, from cancer, followed soon after by Doug’s passing from a progressive illness.  By virtue of her indomitable spirit and determination, she was able to find new meaning and happiness with her newfound group of friends, “The Grandettes,” with whom she greatly enjoyed practicing and performing onstage in choreographed dance.  She especially enjoyed socializing with her closest friends, known informally as “The Bridesmaids.”

Towards the end of 2011, LaWanda and Roger met, at the age of 75, she enthusiastically joined him for a motorcycle odyssey that spanned almost 40,000 miles, around the U.S. 3 times, parts of Canada, and even their honeymoon in Slovenia and Italy.  In 2014, they bought their cabin in North Idaho, which they remodeled, and spent many happy summers, snowy Christmases, and New Year’s Eve bonfires, with friends and family, enjoying the quiet life together.

LaWanda passed away suddenly in Phoenix, Arizona, on February 22, 2024, having celebrated her 88th birthday 6 weeks previously.  Her last motorcycle ride was 11 days before that.  During her long struggle with her debilitating illness, she never once complained, and faced each day with a positive attitude and a smile.

LaWanda has been predeceased by both parents Basil and Agatha (Tebo) Hathcock, two sisters, Jean and Barbara, a newborn (twin) son Patrick, her beloved daughter, Cathy Couls, one grandson, "BJ", and her husband, Douglas Price.  She leaves behind 5 children, 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two stepdaughters, and her loving husband, Roger.

She also leaves behind her legacy of love for her family and friends, shared so genuinely from her caring heart…. And that truly beautiful soul which shined through her warm green eyes.

Like the hummingbird she so admired, LaWanda was small but strong, energetic, and determined.  And like the hummingbird, having shown us her iridescent beauty, she has too soon departed.
