Happily retired in Sun City West since 1992, he became an artisan, making and repairing jewelry for family and friends. Russell Roosevelt Claytor (Russ), 91, originally from Reading Pennsylvania, died peacefully surrounded by family at the Hospice of the Valley, Surprise Arizona, 23 December 2023.

Born in Reading Pennsylvania on December 1, 1932, to Russell Sr and Dorothy (Kaucher) Claytor. Russ loved visiting his father’s home in rural Virgina and had many fond memories of carefree summers there. He joined the Army at 17 years old to serve his country in the Korean War. Russ was wounded at the battle of the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea on his 18th birthday and was awarded the Purple Heart. After his time in the Army, Russ joined the Police Department in Reading Pennsylvania. He was one of the founding members of the Reading K-9 Corps. He served the city of Reading from 1960 to 1978 retiring as a Lieutenant. He was sought after and returned to the Police as a Chief for Ontelaunee Township Pennsylvania. After ten years as Chief of Police, Russ retired again and moved to Sun City West Arizona. Russ thrived in retirement, playing golf, serving in the Lion’s Club, and making beautiful jewelry at the Toy-Ki Silver Craft Club in Sun City West.

Russ is survived by his wife Arlene Mae (Dietz) Claytor, the love of his life for almost 72 years, married in June 1952. Russ is also survived by their three boys; Steven Claytor (Catharine) of Brewton Alabama, Alan Claytor (Carolyn) of Sierra Vista Arizona, and Keith Claytor (Christine) of Fleetwood Pennsylvania. They have enjoyed the legacy of six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
