Ophoven, Wilbert J. (Willie), Age 89, of MN & AZ.
Willie passed away peacefully on October 18th, 2023, due to complications from a heart attack and stroke 3 days earlier. Born the youngest of 19 children to John and Anna Ophoven on January 23rd, 1934, in Walkins, MN. Willie proudly served in the U.S. Army, was a member of the VFW and owner of Champeau Ophoven Optical located in downtown Mpls.
Willie and beloved wife Ermie married in their early 20s and built a full life based on unwavering faith and their love of family and friends. They raised their 3 boys in Crystal, MN. Enjoyed 54 years together entertaining, summers at their cabin on Lake Mary, bowling, golfing, and many other activities. They moved full-time to Sun City West, AZ in the early 2000s.
Willie will be deeply missed for his laughter, gift of gab, constant puttering, and willingness to always lend a helping hand. (It didn’t take much of a hint and you knew that Willie would be there.) In addition to Ermie, Willie was preceded in death by their much-loved son Jim. Willie is survived by; children, John & Tracy, Jeff & Kris; grandsons, Scott, Rob, J.D., Tim, and Michael; great grandchildren, his “Little Squirts”, James, Dylann, and Ryder.
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Jeffery Pakula, MD, and staff at Cardiac Care Solutions and to the ICU staff at Banner Del Web Medical Center for their compassion and excellence in care. As well as the Staff and Residents at Solstice Independent Sr. Living (Sun City West) for welcoming Willie into their community and outpouring of friendship and support this past year.
Family and friends are welcome to an informal Celebration of Life in MN at The Medina Entertainment Center on Sunday, Nov 19th from 1:00-4:00pm.
